Dover to Dunkirk ferry: the quieter Channel crossing

Dover to Dunkirk is the Channel's understated alternative to Calais: a little longer on the water, but often calmer, cheaper off-peak, and perfectly placed for Belgium, the Netherlands and eastern France.

Crossing time and frequency

The Dover to Dunkirk crossing takes about two hours, roughly half an hour longer than Dover–Calais. DFDS is the sole operator, running around a dozen sailings a day spread across the clock.

That extra half hour on board is often repaid on land: the Dunkirk terminal feeds straight onto the A16 motorway with no city traffic to negotiate.

Where is the Dunkirk ferry terminal?

The terminal is at Loon-Plage, in Dunkirk's western port area, about 25 kilometres west of Dunkirk town centre. It is purpose-built for ferry traffic, so boarding and unloading are quick.

From the terminal the A16 runs east toward Belgium (Bruges is under an hour) and west toward Calais, while the A25 heads inland to Lille and connections to Paris.

Prices and who it suits

Dover–Dunkirk is a vehicle-only route aimed at drivers, and its fares are broadly in line with Calais — sometimes cheaper midweek and off-peak. As always, booking ahead and avoiding Friday evenings and holiday getaways keeps prices down.

It particularly suits anyone heading to Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany or the French Nord, and anyone who prefers to skip the busier Calais approach roads.

What to know before you sail

Check in 45 to 60 minutes before departure and have passports ready for French border control. As with all Channel routes, allow extra time in peak periods for enhanced EU entry checks.

Foot passengers are not carried on Dover–Dunkirk, so it is cars, motorhomes, motorcycles and coaches only.
